Some of Jimmy's best work.

This was the second time I have won an Intramural basketball championship. I don't think anything in my life will be able to beat the feeling I had when we "Dis House" won our first one. This was the year after we lost to Ed "No Look" Mejia and the faculty team. It was Michael and myself against the world. It was a really good league that year. Here is an article written by Jimmy Phillips that came out in the Clocktower a couple of days after we won. Enjoy.

‘Dis House Brings Championship Home

In light of my recent blunder of rating the eventual champs eighth place in the previous power rankings, I decided I would give them a personal interview just to clear up any bad blood between me and Richard Young, the founder of ‘Dis House. So sit back and enjoy the words of the greatest ball hog to ever grace the crackling wood floor of the Thunderdome.

JP: Okay Rich, I want to issue a formal apology for ranking you guys eighth going into the playoffs.

RY: We would say that it was good bulletin board material for the championship run, but the paper didn’t come out until after the championship. We got a chuckle out of it but we made sure not to rub the fresh ink on our championship shirts.

JP: Did you feel going into the season that your team had the goods to win it all?

RY: Yes we did. In the 5th floor power rankings we rated ourselves #1. We knew we had lost a big part of the team from last year, but we felt our role players were better.

JP: When was the point you felt your season turned around?

RY: The beginning of the season didn’t start like we thought it would. We lost some games in which we didn’t have some of our key players and we didn’t know how to deal with double teams. When everyone finally started showing up and our role players began to figure out their roles we knew that the playoffs would be special.

JP: Who was an unsung hero for your team this year?

RY: We feel that our whole team was unsung based on our power ranking in a previous issue (by an unnamed moron). If I had to talk about one guy, I would say that Nathan Shields would be that guy. His defense down the stretch and timely three point shooting was unbelievable (plus I am dating his sister).

JP: Okay, tell me about the history of ‘Dis House.

RY: In the year of 2004, Richard Young and Daniel Force used their first round pick to select Mike Paradise and grabbed Zach Timothy later because we knew he was a sleeper ready to awake. Last year we went out in the first round of the playoffs to the staff team like some chumps. We were really disappointed. Paradise actually called in to a talk radio show in KC for some sports psychology advice. We knew we weren’t going to go out like punks again.

JP: Did you try and keep together a core from last year’s team?

RY: Yes: the core of the team is Richard Young with the scoring threat, Paradise as the cagy veteran, the sheer determination of Zach Timothy and the passionate cheer leading efforts of Alana Castillo.

JP: So since my team opened the season by beating you guys, we should pretty much be co-champs, right?

RY: Well, actually we have to give you guys some props. That whole game plan about double teaming me with fast guards…well…that mug worked.

JP: So you are actually complimenting my game plan?

RY: Uhh…Jimmy….every dog has his day, but not every dog has the championship t-shirt.

JP: Hey Rich, technically you don’t have a t-shirt.

RY: Yeah well, Brent said they was coming in a little while and they are gonna have a tight design.

JP: Let’s talk about the members of your team now.

RY: Our center, Brad Bascom played consistent, long minutes all season and that was good since we knew from the get-go he would be our first pick. Zach Timothy and Josh Blackburn’s defensive hustle was necessary on a team habitually known for not playing D. Juan Carlos Huerta and Caleb Herwick showed poise under pressure and added to the chemistry of the team. Luke Mackey, Tyler Miller and Shon Mallor helped our team by never showing up, therefore me and Paradise never had to sit. Hey, they got a free “T” out the deal.

JP: Richard, why did people like me not think that you had what it took and totally hated on your style of play?

RY: That’s an interesting question hater…I mean uhh…Jimmy. Well, people hate on our style of play because the bulk of our offense goes through me. What people didn’t know was that Michael Paradise averaged 18.3 points and 3.7 steals a game to go with my 28 points and 10 passes (not assists, total passes per game).

JP: So basically you model yourselves after the Los Angeles Kobe’s…I mean Lakers.

RY: Yeah I guess so. But other than the Lake Show we have modeled ourselves after the Dallas Mavericks because we don’t play D and the And 1 Mix Tape because of our flashy style and in-your-face-moves.

JP: During the draft there was a rumor you were considering setting up your offense like a soccer team. Tell me about that.

RY: We just thought it would be efficient to have me and Michael play offense and everyone else just play constant defense. It would limit my passing options down to only one.

JP: Any final comments to sum-up the season?

RY: I am just really proud of my team the way they carried themselves on and off the court. I wanna throw a shout-out to the fan section of Esther Shields, Alana Castillo and Zach Timothy’s mom. And lastly a bit of advice to you Jimmy, a fellow ball hog: Embrace the role that you take as a ball hog and cut down on the hating and passing.

JP: Thanks Rich, that means a lot…I guess.

A couple notes from Big Rich in 2010 looking back to 05:

1. Wow I still used the word "mug' back then.
2. I am no longer dating Esther but Michael did marry Alana AKA the A Train
3. That year if you looked up the word "Ball Hog" in the dictionary there would be a big old picture of me shooting a shot with 3 guys on me. I am not like that anymore and that's not a choice I am just old and injured all the time. For example last year when I wasn't injured I shot 30 times in a game. Hey! I was feeling it.
4. That year's team is alot like this year's team. Except now the roles are reversed. I am playing the role of Michael Paradise. A pass first point guard that hits big shots. But let's be honest Jason didn't score 28 points a game this season. Dang I was ballin in 05. (And yes if you are wondering Michael and I took stats and looked at them everyday.)
5. In 05 after we won we went out to eat at Olive Garden. Tonight I want to curl up into a ball and die cause I am so frickin tired. After the game I was to tired to celebrate. Is that sad? Yes it is.
6. I am still as competitive as I was back then. Just not any good now. If you think Big Rich has lost a step you are wrong. I've lost two.
7. I can't really blame the fans tonight for wanting us to lose. We were the heavy favorites cause we were undefeated. In 05 we were the underdogs. And it felt so good. Face!
7. I still "Protect Dis House!"

I was wondering when this was coming. Some of my best work? No. My GREATEST work ever. Particularly, the part about the soccer team. That's sheer freaking brilliance right there. When this thing came out in 05, people literally lost their minds reading it. They'd just come up to me and start laughing, and I knew exactly why.

That mug changed my life. It is just like Bill Self says. Everyday, someone reminds me about what I was a part of in 2005.

RY: Uhh…Jimmy….every dog has his day, but not every dog has the championship t-shirt.
There has never been a better quote than this.

Now, before we discuss "betting to win" in more detail, let's begin by examining what a "bet" actually is. To be able to bet requires two parties: the party placing the bet and the party accepting the bet. A bet is a gamble based on the possibility of a particular event occurring or having occurred. Note that not all gambles are bets. This is because the phrase "to take a gamble" generally means to risk something valuable in order to gain something of even greater value, and where the outcome is uncertain to some degree or other. A gamble need not involve another party, but a bet most certainly does.

You have to think of those days when there will be steaming games and you can't replenish your bankroll. That would be worse than 9/11. Since there is no rule that says that you've got to bet on all games, there is no hurry. Despite a long list of football betting tips, you have to manage your money. betting football Myth #2: Betting lines get balanced action.
Reality: While the goal is to construct a betting line that is of equal attraction to both favorite and underdog players, it rarely works out that way. More typically, a third of the games on the NFL schedule will have an insignificant amount of betting to cause much of a concern, another third will have active but balanced betting and the remaining third will have mostly one-way action. Traditionally, how the house fares on these lopsided games, called "decisions," determines whether books win or lose.

Lastly, go online. The Internet is a minefield of information, and football betting tips are just some of the many things you can find. You can search for websites dedicated to football and find the season’s statistics, which will help you determine the odds and probabilities of which team will emerge victorious from the field. You can read weblogs, or blogs, of individuals so well-versed in football speak that they’re giving out football betting tips. Also, don’t forget to visit forums where you can swap information and football betting tips with other football fans.
