I've been playing intramural basketball since John Wagner got here...the first time, and in all my years I have never seen a weirder regular season. Everything we thought we knew was wrong. The big games weren't that big and and the small games were huge. Going into the playoffs we still have big questions on what is going to happen. The tourney starts this week! I'll go into the matchups in the rankings but first we have some regular season awards to give out.
Game of the year/Moment of the year: Mitch vs Rich round 1/The call
If I am not mistaken I think this is the only game of the year that each team had their full squad at the game. If you were there you know why it will go down in regular season intramural lore.
Comeback player of the Year: Jared "Money" Messenger
The people that thought that Jared was going to bring weak stuff after being injured at every late night basketball were wrong. Jared played big in big games and is the engine that makes the sophomore team go. He came back from a rough season last year and many emergency room visits from late night.
New Comer of Year: Tyler Morrison
Tyler brought his game from the land down under. He has the only dunk of this year's intramurals. He gets the award.
Rookie of the Year: Zach Morrison/Elliot/Brad Carlson
One is the Korean Demon and the other takes people to the cup and the other blocks trash.
Sixth Man of the Year: That dude from PA on Mitch's team.
Dude is nice.
Ninth Man of the Year: 1D
I don't know what intramurals would be like without 1D and frankly I don't want to know.
Defensive Player of the Year: Demion Dublin
I was going to use this space to say something nice about Demion but I don't want to.
MVP 2013: Boom
Led the league in scoring, three pointers, foul shots and getting his. (I'm not sure about those stats but I think that it's most likely true.)
And now for the Rankings.
1. Demion and Boom
Being completely real Demion and Boom haven't been tested this season. Have they been down in the second half of any games this year? They will have to face either Richard or Jared to get to the championship. Will this year be the year they put it together for a magical run?
2. Mitch and Jordan
This team has played consistently all year long. They had a shorthanded loss to Demion's team in the regular season but that seems like a long time ago now. They have a favorable road to the championship and this year Jared is on the other side of the bracket. It's now or never.
3. The Sophomore Squad + Ryan Perry
This is the surprise team of the season. These guys play like a complete squad. They check their ego's at the door and bring their lunch pale and hard hat to go to work. Sky's the limit for these guys. But will playoff nerves bite them?
4. Rich and Tyler
Will a disappointing regular season stop this squad from putting some momentum together for these playoffs?
Or will it be like last year when they lost their last three regular season games and then stormed all the way to the championship. By Thursday we will know.
5. Drew and Jared
The Jared and Richard Championship game that has been happening for three years in a row will come to an end because Jared and Richard's squad's face off tomorrow night in the first round of the playoffs. An anti climactic ending to the best rivalry of the last decade in intramural basketball. Will Jared and Drew find their mojo and remind everybody once again that the regular season is for suckas? Only time will tell.
6. Kody and Ethan
So much talent. Yet they never played as a team. Will they figure it out in time for the first round?
7. Chad and Will
These guys lost the heartbreaker of the year on Thursday night. Will that give them the fuel they need to make a run? If they do it will be because of Curt hitting threes from errwhere.
8. The Heavy Favorites
If these boys have been anything it has been consistent. Sadly the Heavy Favorites are not favorites vs the Girls team this week. If you are going to watch one game this week watch the Championship...but if you are going to watch two let the other one be the Heavy Favorites vs that Girl's squad.
