Film Reviews The Hurt Locker, Funny People

Earlier I mentioned that there were still a few more movies that I was excited to see this summer. This weekend I got a chance to see two of those movies. On Friday afternoon my wife and I went and saw the Hurt Locker. The Hurt Locker is the story of a bomb squad in 2004 Iraq. Iraq war movies have not been very popular in the last couple of years because people don't want to be depressed. This movie is not the traditional war movie that has a message to tell you about the rights or wrongs about the war. This is a story about people that takes place during a war. The director Kathryn Bigelow does a good job of not trying to shove anything down your throat. What she does do is amp up the suspense and action. There are scenes in this movie that will really have you nervous of what is goin to happen next. Jeremy Renner has given a great performace of a cocky soldier that is addicted to the adrenaline of war. You have plenty of time to see this movie and you will hear alot about it because I predict that it will be in contention for awards.
Last night I saw the movie Funny People directed by Judd Apatow. You hear so much about Judd Apatow movies but you would be surprised to find out that this is only the third movie that he has directed and one that means a little bit more to him. His whole family is in the movie. The girl that got away is played by Leslie Mann who is married to Apatow and both of his children have roles in the movie. The movie is about a guy named George Simmons and he is a comedian that has made tons of money but finds out that he has a disease and most likely will die soon. He decides that he wants to do more stand up like he used to do when he was cutting his teeth in the comedy scene. He finds that he needs help writing jokes so he hires an up an coming comedian named Ira Wright to help him write some jokes. They become friends and the movie is a journey through what George thinks are the last moments of his life. Sounds depressing but you won't be disspointed if you are looking for the gross humor that you found in Knocked Up and The 40 year old virgin. I loved this movie because if focuses alot on stand up comedy and the psychology of what is funny and what makes people laugh. I have always had an interest in those sorts of things. The movie is a little long, but if you hang in there I think you will find it entertaining and thought provoking. So my final say is see both of these movies. If you like movies if you don't like movies you just wasted a lot of time reading this.

I saw Judd on the ACTOR'S STUDIO with the mighty masculine James Lipton and he said Ira's character was loosely based on himself. As a kid he was a defunct stand-up comedian but idolized all the greats and this movie was his homage to them. Judd and Adam Sandler were roommates before they were famous.

there's a thin line between tragedy and comedy. -ed
