When it comes to College Basketball there are really only 4 teams through out it's history that really mean anything. These are the programs that have the most tradition and victories. Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, and Duke. I can understand why most people don't care as much about College Basketball as they do about the NBA. If you are not in one of these fan bases then the tournament is really the only thing that attracts you from year to year. But if you are a fan of one of these teams then it means everything to you.
Since The Kansas Jayhawks won the title in 07-08 both Duke and North Carolina have won one. Kentucky and North Carolina are heavily favored this year.
They say that if your team wins the big game then you have nothing to complain about for five years. I certainly can't complain about the the Jayhawks after the championship. Since 2008 the Kansas Jayhawks have the best winning percentage and the least losses of the mentioned teams. Yet they have failed to reach the final four. Unless you are a real college basketball fan you will put more stock in the tournament then winning your conference. I think it is a lot harder to go through your conference and come out the best team then to get on fire at the end of the season and win six games. But to each his own.
Now that the NBA is looking more and more like the season will be cancelled all eyes will be on the amateurs to get their basketball fix. This could be one of the best basketball season's of all time. At the beginning of this season these four teams are ranked in the top 11 of the nation. Kansas being the eleventh ranked team.
One time I was in the airport talking to a pastor about marriage. He told me the two biggest issues in a marriage are expectation and communication. You can think about that communication part later. What I want to focus on is expectations. The summer before Sherron Collin's senior year at Kansas I was talking with my buddy Trey on my expectations of that Kansas team. It was returning two of the best players in the nation in Cole Aldrich and Sherron. It was also getting who many people thought was the best freshman and a one and done type player in Xavier Henry. I told Trey that I thought the Jayhawks would lose three games. I didn't think we would lose any non conference games but I thought we would lose two in conference and one or none in the final four. I told him that if we lost more then three games and we didn't reach the final four that this season would be a disappointment for me. I expected big things from my team. I was almost right. Kansas did end up losing three games. But the last one wasn't in the final four. It was in the second round vs Northern Iowa. Here was my reaction.
That loss and Xavier Henry leaving to the NBA hurt me really bad. As a matter of fact I wasn't nearly as excited as I should have been when we landed who many people thought was the freshman of the year and one and done type player Josh Selby. I was still hurting by the Northern Iowa loss. When Selby was finally cleared to play I thought that we had the most complete team top to bottom. When we got to the tournament it could not have been drawn up any better for us to get to the Final Four. Then came VCU in the elite eight. Then came my spiral into depression. I expected big things from my team.
This year the expectations are a little different. We have a good chance to win the Big 12 this year. Do we have a chance to win the National Championship? I will say this, if we win the National Championship it will be like Duke winning two years ago. The best team in the nation wouldn't have won the Championship. (KU would have crushed Duke that year. You are lucky you barely beat Butler Jason!) I think that the Big 12 will come down to Kansas and Baylor with the edge going to Kansas because Scott Drew reminds me of Rick Barnes and not in a good way (recruits amazing talent but can't coach worth a lick). My preseason National title pick is either North Carolina or Kentucky. Both of these teams are so loaded with talent that it disgusts me. I am going to lean towards North Carolina winning it all because I think Roy is a better coach then Calipari even though I think there are more NBA players on Kentucky's roster.
Kansas has it's first huge test of the season November 15 (tonight depending on when you read this) when they face Kentucky in Madison Square Garden. I think that Kansas will fight hard and lose by 12. They don't have near as much talent on their roster but they always seem to play well on the rare occasion that they are underdogs.
I am going to predict that Kansas struggles early in the season and gets better game after game with a final record of 28-8 with a loss in the Elite Eight. Enjoy the season everybody. Rock Chalk Jayhawk.
Here are a few pictures of me and the ballers from KU.
