World Cup

I will admit that I'm excited for the world cup. But not that excited.
Probably just as excited as England is to have someone in the 100 yard dash at the Olympics. I'm excited that my guy is in there. But I'm not expecting much. If the US loses to England on Saturday I will be as sad as when my soccer team loses a match. So not that sad is my bullet point. If the US wasn't in this mug I would rather be watching paint dry. But since they are I hope they kill England on Saturday. And before Tim goes off and talks some trash saying that England is going kill us let me just say that Yeah you are probably right. But if you England loses it will be so...frickin...sweet. Let's go USA. And now let me say something quick about soccer. Sometimes I feel guilty that I don't like soccer that much. But like I always say I have to be honest with myself. And I honestly don't dig it that much. I know it's the world's biggest sport. But I don't live in the world. I live in Nebraska...wait. So call me what you will. Call me a bad sports fan. I don't give a flip. I'm comfortable where I'm at. Maybe when I move to Brazil I'll follow it more. But until I do that I will watch the World Cup till USA loses and then I will go back to watching the Royals get smoked every day of my life.

Not to step in or anything, but this actually is this years official FIFA world cup song. The country that hosts usually get to pick things like that.

Rich I somewhat agree with you on the whole soccer thing. I'm not the biggest fan of watching soccer. I much rather be playing it, but just like when your team is playing in the superbowl for football, when Argentina is playing in the world cup no matter what time of the morning it is (6am sometimes) the whole house will be up to watch the game. We have actually called in sick to watch a game before and left the satellite radio on to hear about a game when we are in the mountains.

When it comes to the World Cup, no matter how much you don't like the sport, you can always get into the game and watching your team score is the best thing ever. I don't get excited about watching soccer on TV until the world cup starts, then it's a different story. I've been on edge watching a match even if I don't really care what the outcome is. I think it has something to do with pride for the country, tradition, and heritage. Born in the states but family from Argentina. You better believe that I will be up at anytime to watch the game when Argentina plays.

btw... Argentina is going to win. lol

Okay well technically it's not the FIFA WC song, but it is coca cola's and they are one of the WC's main sponsors so it might as well be...

1. I kinda just like the song. I did not say it was the main song. Youtube did. But I understand.
2. Jason I appreciate your comments. I like the idea of cheering for your home country. Even though you live here in the US I can't be mad if you are cheering for where you are from. That would be like people getting mad if I don't cheer for the Huskers. Just cause I live here doesn't mean I'm from here.
3. Yara I was struggling with a way to tackle your comment and then I read it again. You said that I dogged your team. I actually pointed out that they would probably win. But like I told Jason I can see why you would pull for England since your family came from there...oh wait. Your point is now officially invalid. I know I know you're going to tell me something about how you have been going for England since you were two after Gerzon polluted you with his mind poison. But I don't care. Unless you are pulling for United States(where you were born)Some central American country (where your mom/family was born)or Cuba (where Tio Dixon was born) then your point means nothing to me. I should be pulling for England cause half of my frickin ancestors are from there. But I cut ties with those dudes at the American Revolution.

Oh and since we are all writing two comments. Yara I disown you as a cousing until you either go to England and have tea there or realize that rooting for England to beat USA is like rooting for the Devil to win American Idol...maybe not a good analogy but either way disowned.

Yara cheering for England is like white guys with dreads...(thay can do it but it just don't look right)

Rich honesty is good, I'm glad you were able to say it's the world's sport, not many Yanks can do that.

I think Jason put it best. The problem in the USA is that soccer has no history, and without history there is no pride. While I was born in England, and raised here all my life, as most of my friends know, I am from Croatia. in 1998 when Croatia a country of 2 million people finished 3rd in the World Cup, we were celebrating like we won the thing. Walking around London rocking a Cro jersey, nothing felt better. What American don't realise, is when it comes to soccer, away from the USA, every village, town, city, neighbourhood has a team. Every team has around 25-30 players. every team has a youth academy, team. teams are involved in the community. There isn't just the NBA. There are numerous divisions/leagues so when clubs, yet alone nations play there is a lot at stake. your team is your religion, soccer is a matter of life and death. I always argue to my Euro friends and say look every state in the USA is like a country, so when Nebraska plays Kansas its like England v France. and that's cool.

Also real soccer fans don't care about soccer players or sexy plays, it's all about if your team wins and losses. It's all about being from Lincoln and being able to go into Omaha wearing a jersey and knowing your team is better than those scums.

I still don't know how the USA can produce sports fans like BRSW favorite Logan. How can he follow Lebron around and call that pride? the only person that should be proud of LeBron at an individual level are his momma and coaches.

Thanks for the acknowledgement and I'm glad you guys get where im coming from. Tim is right too... every neighborhood has its own team and every city has their own team, when we aren't in the world cup everybody cheers for their cities teams, but when the WC comes around it doesn't matter where you live, you cheer.

I know in Argentina if we are playing don't expect to be able to go out during a game and find a store or bank or anything really to be open cause it won't be. They will all be at home watching the game and don't think for a moment that when Argentina scores that the whole country won't be cheering.

My parents have told me that when they were still there for the WC that for every goal made their neighborhood would launch rockets into the air as if it were the independence day. Tim is right, its not soccer, its not futbol, it's life! whether you are a fan or not, you watch, and you cheer and you are proud to be from that country and when the refs call out a stupid call you cuss out the TV as if they could hear you! lol its more than passion, it's in our blood.

Actually now that I think about it, Mexico plays tomorrow against South Africa and we have a couple Mexican friends who are coming over at 7am to watch the game. The wife of the couple is taking off the first two hours of work to watch the game... Talk about dedication to your country and the team.

She told her supervisor that something came up. lol... Americans just don't understand. The super bowl is every year, the WC is every 4 so it's a big build up of excitement and frustration and time to get ready. You better believe I'm wearing my Jersey's for every game!

Ok... Now that I have come down a bit and slept off the official shock... I would like the time to make a comment on what I said... and what everyone has been saying...

You are right... America has no history... There are many reason I go for England... and it is not because of my brother and his evil poisoning me since I was two... for one thing England is my favorite country in the world... It is... have I been there, have I been to every country in the world? NO... I Love england because I am a fan of its History, of its literature and its film, DEFINITELY its film... I am even a fan of the weather!!! Its lifestyle is one I yet to experience but i want the opportunity to live there so very badly... That being said... I normally become a fan of a sports team that is my first real introduction to the team and sport... growing up in La Puente with a hispanic family surrounded by hispanics soccer was something I always heard of... but I didn't KNOW IT until I saw my first match in 98... Argentina vs. England... I saw Michael Owen come off the bench and astonish the world when he "too speak in my former cousin's language" CROSSED OVER like 5 guys in a row... and from that moment I was hooked... that was it... i didn't care... HE was my favorite player and THAT was my favorite team... combined with the fact that it was ENGLAND I could not have asked for more...

Going back to what we were saying about america... Tim was right... how can I take pride in a country who shows no pride for itself...(IN THIS SPORT) don't get crazy!... Most I think feel like my former cousin... "its alright" ... don't get me wrong when the USA plays against any other team I cheer for them... I also know that slowly they are Catching up to the world... I see more and more soccer leagues I'm seeing more and more beautiful soccer fields being built for these leagus... so I think some year from you we may be able to hang with the big boys...

Yarita said...

Secondly...

to my former cousin I say this...

I don't expect you to love the sport... and if you don't like my team whatever... but give this sport its due worth... I mean it really really sucks... you put up a bunch of Basketball Videos and Pictures... Baseball jokes, Football everything.... and i have no care for it...then FINALLY the world cup... i mean... its the WORLD CUP!!!! and I go on to love's to picnic like I do everyday of my life... excited that he will start doing coverage and THIS is what I get... I don't think its fair... :(

I mean you don't follow leagues... You don't care about Liverpool vs. Manchester or Boca vs. River... you don't mention that leagues championships in the futbol realm are probably something the players covent MORE then the cup... you don't cover the Toyota Cup, the Concacaf, Copa Libertadora... Nothing... is it too much to ask for funny, witty, comprehensive coverage of a once in every 4 YEARS world cup tournament that is LOVESTOPICINIC worhty???

Big Rich said...

Yara asking me to have in depth World Cup coverage on my blog is like Michael Paradise to start a blog about his favorite indian food recipes. He likes food. We all know the kid likes food. But he doesn't like that food. I like sports. But I also like Indian food. I had it for lunch today.

a world cup squad has 23 players with the squad numbers 1 to 23!

23 of my high school friends have bought 23 jerseys with the actual players names and numbers on the back and will be rocking them down the pub come saturday.

how awesome is that.

p.s Yara move to London . . . now!

Yarita said...

You know what rich... I love you... even though you are not my cousin i love you...

I don't think what i'm asking for is much... michael asked you to make a category, just cuz, michael said dope a lope should be a category, its one now... i mean ok he doesn't have a catagory to himself... oh wait.. MIKEYDISE....

Awhile ago you said you would write a blog on a Yara Gomez highlight... about a year ago... i know you forgot I'm not mad at that... I'm not even mad when you put up 92095025 things about every other sport...

I don't think i have made a request to loves to picnic... but I think I deserve this... Logan is all over the place... your mother has a catagory... Miriam photos are up from time to time... I mean maybe you need to live with someone for this to work... oh wait... i did live with you for 5 years... well you were always nice to me... oh wait.. no you scared me everytime i was blowdrying my hair... you farted and pointed at me...I saw your bare butt everyday of my life my senior year... and you ignored me during school and in tournaments... I wasn't the nicest person either when I first got there... so maybe i deserved the fowl stench... the derriere in my face... and the heart attacks over the sink...

But tis my request non the less...

Tim... you have no idea how badly i want that! to have High Tea over there and not somewhere in which the pubs owners name is Wendy LEE

Tim said...

haha high tea. the london restaurants, shows, football, shopping, music scene, lifestyle is waiting for you! hurry up and leave the midwest!

p.s I do think Rich should give in to your request BUT it's kinda pointless, as he dosen't know zilch about the game so . . . . he should waste his time on the KU stuff before they become extinct.

Someone responded to something Tim said.. that is officially the first time. Congrats Tim this doesn't mean anyone likes you.
